soroca.jpg (7466 bytes) Once the king of Moldavia Petru Raresh was riding his horse on the bank of the Dniester. The bank was covered with forests. While riding on the bank of the river he saw a henhawk attacking two swans. Petru Raresh took an arrow, aimed at the henhawk and pulled the bow string…

But just at that moment the king`s horse got scared of something, neighed loudly and rose on hind legs. The kings hand shook and the arrow hit one of the swans, not the henhawk. The poor swan fell down… The remaining swan was flying round that place high in the sky calling for its love. Then seeing that it did not come back, the swan threw itself down on a crag, not far from the village Casutsa.

Approaching the rock and seeing blood on it the king got very sad. Not far from the rock a master was cutting some stones.

“Is the stone durable?”

“You won`t find a more durable stone that this one, Your Majesty, if you want to build a fortress to stand for ever…”

“Let it be so! A fortress should be built of this rock.”

Since then the crag has been named the Swan`s Rock, and the stone material taken from that place near the village Casutsa ( now Caseuts ) was used to built the famous Soroca fortress
